Arc Aspicio Partners with JMU XLabs to Address Human Trafficking

Washington DC, April 13, 2020 — Arc Aspicio, along with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), is collaborating  with James Madison University (JMU)’s XLabs Program to provide mentoring and subject matter expertise to students who are using innovative methods to help combat human trafficking.

JMU XLabs Program allows students across disciplines and majors to work directly with real client partners on problems that resist easy solutions. Through this program, Arc Aspicio mentors students on the complexities, tactics, and importance of law enforcement collaboration in developing impactful solutions for this challenging area.

For the course, Arc Aspicio, along with HSI, devised a problem for the students to tackle throughout the spring semester focused on improving collaboration between law enforcement and human trafficking victim advocates and service providers. The question asks "How might we improve collaboration among law enforcement, human trafficking victim advocates/service providers, and other stakeholders to deter the crime and help victims seek justice and continue recovery?".

“It is really rewarding to see the students understand the complexity of the problem and begin to think about solutions!” said Cheryl Bassett, Senior Manager at Arc Aspicio and co-sponsor of the class. “We are excited to hear their bold ideas at the end of the semester.”

Arc Aspicio provided a list of contacts for the students, and since then, the students have interviewed more than 30 professionals fighting human trafficking, becoming more informed on the matter to create an innovative solution towards the problem question. The students present their solutions to the advisers at the end of the class. Agencies, non-profits, and other organizations may adopt the solution if they could benefit from implementation – achieving the ultimate goal of the program.

This collaboration is a continuation of Arc Aspicio’s efforts to create and deliver mission focused and human centered ideas to combat human trafficking and to address other law enforcement challenges. Beyond this, Arc Aspicio works with Federal agencies and think tanks and provides pro bono consulting for non-profits to combat this widespread, complex, and difficult crime.
